A unique combination of old and new nature in a vast polder landscape

Food Forest "Zonnegoed" is the first food forest to be planted on a field in the Noordoostpolder in the province of Flevoland. As part of Joost and Corné van Strien's farm "Zonnegoed", the food forest will grow against the backdrop of the Schokland World Heritage site. Van Strien aims to take advantage of this unique combination of old and new nature in the vast polder landscape, by partly opening up the food forest for recreation and education. Part of the profit his company currently makes, is invested in making the soil more sustainable. Food Forest Zonnegoed will also contribute to this. Moreover, the food forest offers the opportunity to offer a much wider range of agricultural products.

Labyrinth

The ground work in Food Forest "Zonnegoed" is finalized. The circular center will become the recreational part, including several pools and a labyrinth. Around this, the production forest will be planted

Based on the preliminary design, in the winter of 2020-2021 the edges of the food forest were planted with species for wind protection and pollination. Groundwork was carried out in 2021. Pools were dug and the central labyrinth was constructed. The northern part of the food forest was planted as well, with food forest species.

The preliminary design of Food Forest "Zonnegoed"

The design of Food Forest Zonnegoed was further developed in 2022 in collaboration with Joost van Strien, in order for the plot to be filled with edible and nitrogen-fixing species in the coming winters. The food forest may bear the name “Parliamentary Food Forest”, after former Minister Schouten of Agriculture donated a tree to each parliamentary group, to be planted in a food forest in the Netherlands. The Food Forestry Foundation picked up the gauntlet and nominated Food Forest Zonnegoed. In the final design, these trees will have a special place that can be visited by Lower House factions and their networks.
